Do QR codes expire
SmartQRCode editorial · Updated October 2026
Do QR codes expire as a file format? No. Static modules do not age. A hosted URL lasts for the host resolve window. Pause can stop ink that still looks fine. Archive keeps scanning. A Canva static https file skips our host entirely.
Do QR codes expire
A static symbol stores the payload in the modules. Changing the payload means printing a new symbol. That is why Wi-Fi cannot be edited after ink. The pattern does not contain a countdown. Outdoor UV still chalks; that is ink chemistry, not ISO expiry.
A hosted symbol stores a URL the provider resolves. The printed modules stay the same while the destination changes. The trade is dependence. A shutdown, an unpaid invoice, or a pause can stop a physically perfect print.
SmartQRCode redirects use 302 so a 301 cache does not freeze an old destination. That keeps edits live. It is not a forever battery.
Packaging that must outlive a campaign site should encode a URL you will keep, or stay static. See packaging. A never-expires angle is still a hosted URL, still provider-tied.
Does the paper itself expire
Paper yellows. Thermal receipts fade. Modules remain legally QR until the camera cannot see contrast. Start at 2 cm across for a phone at about 30 cm. That rule does not add years. It adds millimetres.
A calendar date in the payload (an event page that 404s after the night) expires the experience, not the squares. Guests will say the code expired. They mean the site.
What pause does to a live poster
Pause is the dashboard stop. Archive is not pause. User-archived codes keep scanning. If you "deleted" a campaign in your head but archived it, the poster still works. If you paused it, the poster fails. Say the verb you used.
Lifetime with no renewal still pauses if you pause. Billing tenure is not the hop.
Can a destination page expire instead
Yes. Event pages, expired certificates, lookalike migrations, extra shorteners that die. A website code can be pointed at a living URL without reprinting. A static Canva file cannot. When you needed no provider and no edits, Canva was the permanence tool. When you needed swaps, you accepted D82.
Continue: how long do QR codes last, are QR codes permanent.
How teams misread expiry in a status meeting
Someone holds up a poster and says the code expired. Ask which clock they mean. If Camera will not lock finders, the ink or contrast expired. If the preview host 404s on our side, check pause versus archive. If our hop works and the far page is gone, the campaign site expired. If a phone that scanned in March ignores the April destination, a 301 cache expired the edit, not the paper.
Static modules do not carry a countdown. You can encode a date in a URL path, and that path can 404, and guests will still blame QR. Write the far URL on the brief with an owner and a sunset. Hosted types can retarget that sunset without a reprint. Static types cannot. Canva is the right sunset tool only when you accept the reprint or you accept the 404.
Outdoor UV chalks. Plan the reprint even if the destination is immortal. Thermal tickets fade in a week of a hot car. Receipt codes should be larger than the desk rule and printed dark. None of those are SmartQRCode timers. Lifetime billing with no renewal does not slow chalk. Pause still stops a hosted hop on a board that looks new.
Wi-Fi "expiry" is a password rotation. There is no dashboard revive. Confirm the new print on a phone that is not already on the SSID. A phone already joined will appear to succeed even when the modules are wrong.
A never-expires marketing angle is still a host. Read D82 aloud in the meeting. If the fear is this company disappearing, encode statically. If the fear is a wrong URL in the wild, stay hosted and keep the domain you will still own. Mixing those fears produces a static teaser you cannot patch and a hosted memorial you did not want depending on us.
Questions this raises
Static modules do not age as a format. Ink fades. Hosted hops fail when the host resolve window closes.
Pause can stop ink that still looks new. Archive keeps scanning. They are different states.
Yes. A calendar date in the payload, a dead campaign site, or a 301-cached old URL can fail while the modules remain perfect.
Lifetime has no renewal. The print still needs the provider. Static Canva files skip that provider.
No timer in the symbol. They fail when the password rotates and you did not reprint.
