Do you have to pay for QR codes
SmartQRCode editorial · Updated October 2026
Do you have to pay for QR codes? Only if you want a host. A frozen https file from Canva can be the entire product. SmartQRCode has no unpaid product tier. Hosted types cost $1.99, $29, $97, or $197 because a host that keeps resolving is the thing you are buying.
Do you have to pay for QR codes
ISO/IEC 18004 does not collect a fee. Phones read valid modules from any generator. Payment starts when you want the printed pattern to stay still while the destination moves, or when you want a scan chart.
This product records totals, device type, and country from headers on hosted types. It cannot see a name. Wi-Fi has empty logs. Those facts do not create an unpaid plan. Zero codes is the unpaid limit.
A conference lanyard URL that dies on Sunday is a Canva job. A year of event signs that will swap the map link is a website job. Mixing them wastes either money or reprints.
When is the answer no you do not pay us
When nobody will edit the payload and nobody will ask how many people scanned. Encode the final https address. Export PNG or SVG. Print at least 2 cm across for a phone at about 30 cm. Skip checkout.
That no does not mean the printer is free. Stock, laminate, and vinyl are still bills. It means this company is the wrong vendor.
What are you paying a host for
Edit after print via a 302 hop. A short URL whose density does not explode when you add UTM parameters. A chart that is not a guest list. A pause control that is not the same as archive (archive keeps scanning).
You are also paying for provider dependence. If we stop resolving, hosted ink becomes art. Static files do not have that failure. They have reprint failure instead.
Lifetime vs subscription is optional once you already need a host. Lifetime is one-time with no renewal. Monthly and annual renew. The one-time payment and subscription-free pages are that fork, not a third encoding.
Does Wi-Fi ever need a subscription
No. A Wi-Fi reprint cycle is paper and toner when the password rotates. Do not buy $29 to count joins you will never see. Place the code like a whiteboard password.
If your event also needs a counted URL, that is a second code, hosted, with its own brief. Do not overload the Wi-Fi symbol.
Child pricing: how much does a QR code cost. The Canva trade: what free QR generators actually cost.
What you are not paying when the answer is no
You are not paying SmartQRCode for ISO/IEC 18004. You are not paying for iPhone Camera. You are not paying for a quiet zone of four modules. Those are spec and phone behaviour. The no-pay path is a frozen https file from Canva, Google Chart, or an in-app generator, printed at 2 cm or larger, scanned once on a proof.
What you still pay is the printer. Vinyl, toner, laminate, and a person who will not screenshot a monitor. A weekend market that reprints the same PayPal URL fifty times still chose static correctly if the URL never moved. They chose poorly only if they promised the stallholders a scan chart.
A 7-day paid trial is the wrong way to "try" that stall. After 7 days it converts to annual unless cancelled. That is an intent filter for people who already needed a host. Using it as a souvenir PNG factory fights the product. Cancel before day seven if you discovered you wanted Canva.
Lifetime is a one-time host payment with no renewal. It does not buy independence from the host. It does not buy labels. It does not make Wi-Fi editable. If your event committee asks whether they have to pay, answer with the two dates: will the URL move, and will someone ask for a count. Both never means no. Either yes means some token: $1.99, $29, $97, or $197.
Support at support@smart-qrcode.com cannot mint an unpaid tier. Plan limits for that account are zero codes. A designer who already exported a Canva PNG is finished with us. Point them at press-file hygiene, not at checkout.
On-screen previews encode /qr-preview. Paying does not start until you generate the live hosted URL. Skipping payment by photographing the wizard gives you a square that will not match the campaign. That is not a clever no. That is a failed yes.
Questions this raises
When the payload is a frozen https file that will never move and will never be counted. Canva or the phone generator is enough.
A host that keeps resolving a short URL, 302 edits after print, and scan totals with device type and country from headers.
No. Wi-Fi is static. You pay a Wi-Fi reprint cycle when the password changes, not a dashboard.
No. The 7-day paid trial is an intent filter and converts to annual unless cancelled.
Lifetime has no renewal. The print still needs the host alive. Printers still invoice stock.
