Google review QR code not opening

SmartQRCode editorial · Updated October 2026

A Google review QR code not opening when the hop cannot reach a live review form, or when nobody at the door has a visit to rate. Place ID versus review link mistakes, receipt placement after paying, and a paused review hop are the usual causes. Confirm the URL in a browser, then test-scan the receipt.

Why a google review QR code not opening fails after the hop

This type is a redirect: it accepts a review link or a Place ID and should open a Google review form. If the camera never banners, fix the print. If the camera banners and Google errors, the payload or the hop state is wrong.

Scan redirects are 302 so you can replace a dead Place ID without reprinting. That only helps while the provider still resolves the short URL.

A Canva one-off that encodes a Maps short link is enough for a single event that will never be counted. Use a hosted Google review generator when the listing might change or you want scan totals (scans, not people, not stars).

Do not invent review counts from the dashboard. Analytics cannot see the scanner's name or email.

A Place ID or review URL that is not a live Maps form

Cause: a stale Place ID, a search-result URL, or a Google Business screenshot pasted as the destination. The 302 works. Google does not show a form.

Fix: open the intended review URL in a desktop browser and on an iPhone in Safari. Only when that URL shows a form should you paste it or the Place ID into the generator. Save. The printed modules stay; the hop updates.

Confirm: scan a proof. If Safari-without-scan works and the scan does not, continue to pause and cache. If both fail, stop printing until the listing URL is healthy.

Shopfront placement before the guest has a visit to rate

Cause: the code is on the door. The pause for a review is paying. People at the door have not eaten. They scan out of curiosity and bounce, which looks like "not opening" in staff stories and like empty intent in analytics.

Fix: move the code to the receipt or the bill folder. Keep a website URL on the shopfront if you need a menu hop. Two jobs, two codes.

Confirm: after a paid table, scan the receipt copy at sitting distance. If that scan opens the form and the door scan still "fails" because guests walk away, placement was the cause. Do not reprint the door vinyl for this.

Pause or a broken hosted target on the review type

Cause: the review code is paused, so scanners hit a paused page. Archive would have kept scanning. The destination site can also be down independently of pause.

Fix: resume if the campaign is live. Check the review URL in a browser. Hosted resolution still depends on the provider; a physically perfect receipt cannot hop if resolution stops.

Confirm: a test scan after resume should open the form on a phone that has no old 301 from another vendor. If a staff iPhone still opens an ancient listing, treat it as cache and test a fresh handset.

iOS opening Maps versus the Google review sheet

Cause: geo and maps-style URLs open whatever maps app the phone has set. A review hop should be a review URL or Place ID, but iOS still may present Maps rather than a Google sheet. That is OS behaviour. Do not promise a specific lock-screen or in-app Google UI.

Fix: use the review-form URL Google gives you, not a generic maps pin. Test on iOS and Android. If iOS only offers Maps, add a short line of type: "Leave a Google review" so guests know what success looks like.

Confirm: scan, then see whether a review UI appears without extra taps. If Android works and iOS only shows a pin, the payload is a maps URL. Replace it. Reprint is unnecessary if the code is hosted; retarget and test-scan again.

Maps app versus review form confusion also happens when the Place ID is valid but the URL you pasted is a search-results page. Google search URLs are not review forms. The 302 will happily send the phone there. Rebuild from the review-link Google shows when you are logged into the listing, then paste that into the generator.

Thermal receipt paper fades and is often low contrast. Receipt codes should be larger than the two-centimetre table-tent rule and printed with the printer's darkest setting. A "not opening" report three weeks after install can be faded ink, not a dead Place ID. Test-scan an old receipt and a fresh one. If only the fresh one works, reprint settings, not the listing.

Do not promise that a scan equals a star. Scan totals over time, device, and country are not reviews. If finance wants review volume, export Google's own review tools, not the QR counter.

iOS can still present Maps when the URL is a pin. Replace with the review-form URL. Confirm on an iPhone that is not logged into a Google app, because logged-in staff phones hide the failure guests see.

When a static Maps short link from Canva is enough

A weekend pop-up with one listing and no need for scan totals can encode the review URL in a static file. You will reprint if the listing URL changes. You will not get device or country breakdowns.

If you run many sites or you swap listings, keep the hosted 302. Put the code where the visit is over. Test-scan every new receipt batch; thermal paper fades and is low contrast, which is a print failure that mimics "not opening."

Questions this raises

Usually no. The pause for a review is paying. A shopfront code meets people who have not decided the visit was worth rating. Receipts fit better.

A review link or a Place ID. If that value does not open a Google review form in a browser, the QR hop cannot invent a healthier Maps listing.

The phone opens whatever the URL and the OS decide. There is no guarantee of a particular Google sheet on iOS. Test the same URL in Safari without scanning.

Paste the review link in a browser first. Then scan a press proof. If browser and scan disagree, pause, cache, or a preview screenshot is next.

No. Scan totals are scans, not people, and not star ratings. Analytics cannot see a name or email.
