QR code on flyers after the fold
SmartQRCode editorial · Updated October 2026
A QR code on flyers has to survive the fold, the back pocket, and uncoated stock that spreads ink. Place at least 2 cm on a panel that stays flat. Keep four modules of air inside the trim. Send SVG or a 300 dpi file at the real size. Host the URL if you need a later edit.
QR code on flyers that get folded, pocketed, and thrown
Flyers are handled. That is the job. You are about to place a symbol where a thumb will not land and a roll-fold will not bisect a finder. This procedure is wrong for a window-filling poster (use posters) and wrong for a table tent that sits in ketchup (use table tents). It is also wrong for a single-night static handout: Canva is enough.
Retail marketing flyers often need to prove which offer worked. A dynamic or website code can take a unique destination per version. Two colourways of one static URL cannot.
A door-drop in the rain is an uncoated problem plus a fold problem plus a mud problem. If the flyer will sit on a doormat, laminate is rare and ink will offset onto the next sheet in the stack. Dry the first 50, scan one from the middle of the stack, and look for set-off filling light modules.
A5 in a magazine insert is held at 30 cm. The same artwork blown to A4 for a counter pile is still 30 cm. Do not grow the code just because the paper grew, and do not leave it tiny because the A5 felt crowded. Measure the hold.
Place the symbol where a hand will hold the flyer
- Fold a dummy on the real A5 or DL. Mark where fingers land and where the a5 flyer fold cracks.
- Put the code on a remaining flat panel, at least 2 cm across, quiet zone inside the flyer bleed trim.
- Export SVG or 300 dpi PNG/PDF at that placed size. Do not stretch a web thumbnail. Do not capture /qr-preview.
- On uncoated flyer stock, add millimetres or switch to coated. Ink spread is a size problem.
- Avoid gloss that will sit under a shop downlighter if guests scan in-store. Matte on the symbol helps.
- If you need a logo, use the logo generator and grow the square. Do not shrink modules to fit a footer.
- Print the folded piece, stuff it in a pocket for an hour, then scan the pocket crease scan area. If it fails, move the mark.
Where should the code sit on a folded flyer
Not on the roll-fold. Not under the thumb that holds the sheet while reading. Not bleeding off a trim that the copier will cut inconsistently. A lower corner of the last flat panel is the usual honest place, with a line of type that says what the scan opens. Type in the quiet zone is still a quiet-zone violation.
DL letter-folds hide panels. If the code is inside, people must open the piece first. That is a choice. Do not hide a code you needed on the street.
Does uncoated flyer paper need a larger mark
Uncoated stock drinks ink; modules spread. Newsprint takeaways are the extreme. Compensate with size or coating, not by dropping error correction so the grid looks airier. Higher correction survives more dirt and also densifies the pattern. On spreading paper, density loses.
DPI still matters on digital toner flyers. Compute 300 dpi on the placed millimetres.
Flyer codes that scan on screen and fail on the street
The PDF used RGB chrome from a screenshot. The millimetre size was the on-screen preview, not the print. The fold landed on a finder. Someone sat on the stack. Gloss glared. The hosted URL paused.
Print-run tests need different hosted destinations if the point is to count which design was scanned. Styling two static codes differently does not create two counters. If the printer offers a cheap digital reprint of a leftover static job with a new headline, that reprint still carries the old modules unless you swapped the file. Check the URL on the reprint with a phone that has never opened it.
How to caption the scan so guests know what opens
A flyer in a fist is a two-second object. A code with no caption is a mystery square. Write the destination in words next to it: menu, tickets, map, discount. That line of type sits outside the quiet zone. Inside the zone it is damage.
UTM parameters on a hosted destination can match other campaigns in the same analytics property. Encoding those same query strings into a static symbol densifies the modules at the same millimetre size and then freezes them. If the campaign will still be named next month, host the short URL and put the UTMs on the destination.
Bilingual flyers sometimes run two codes. Two codes on one A5 is a two-tents problem in paper form. Stack them vertically with a language label, or split front and back. A camera that sees both will pick one.
Cheap uncoated takeaways from a night club printer may use the darkest setting on a tired machine. Ask for a make-ready sheet and scan that sheet, not the PDF. If the club lighting is blacklight, UV inks and neon stocks are contrast traps. Stay matte and high contrast. Perforated tear-off stubs should keep the code on the retained half if you needed the scan after the guest left the door.
When a one-night Canva flyer is the whole job
A jumble-sale handout whose URL is a public Facebook event you will not edit and will not count does not need SmartQRCode. We have no unpaid plan. Use a free static generator. Use $1.99 when you will retarget the same printed stack next week.
Fold the dummy. Scan the pocket. Then print the pile. If the flyer is a PDF people will also screenshot, warn them that a phone photo of the flyer is a second-generation blur. Send them the original file instead.
Questions this raises
On a panel that stays flat after the a5 flyer fold, away from the pocket crease scan zone. Hands and folds eat modules.
Often yes. Uncoated flyer stock drinks ink. Grow the symbol or coat the sheet. Do not drop error correction to make modules look roomier.
Only with different hosted destinations or different codes. Two stylings of the same static URL cannot tell you which design won.
SVG or a 300 dpi PNG or PDF at the placed millimetres. Do not upscale a thumbnail. Do not screenshot the preview.
Yes when the URL will never change and you will not count scans. SmartQRCode has no unpaid plan; use a free static generator for that one-off.
