Vcard QR code on business cards
SmartQRCode editorial · Updated October 2026
A vcard QR code on business cards has to survive type, foil, and round corners. Keep the symbol above 2 cm and the quiet zone on the card, then use a hosted vCard landing so you can edit numbers later. A Canva one-off static vCard is enough for a one-run card you will never count.
Vcard QR code on business cards without eating the quiet zone
Business-card codes compete with names, foils, and die-cuts. D24: keep the symbol above 2 cm and the quiet zone inside the card edge, not bled off a rounded corner quiet zone. Four empty modules on all four sides is the spec-minimum.
This is still the vCard landing-page type, not a redirect. The scan opens a page; the contacts app asks the guest to save. See the field recipe in how to make a vCard QR code.
Lanyard flex abrasion is worse than paper. Fabric stretches and wash cycles abrade ink. Prefer a badge insert at a trade show, not a sewn patch at 2 cm. Trade show aisles also need chest height, not a footer.
Do not screenshot /qr-preview. Send SVG or high-resolution PDF to the card printer.
Fit 2 cm and four empty modules on a rounded card
- Build the hosted card in the business card QR generator.
- Place the symbol on the back, away from the round-corner radius.
- Measure 2 cm across the modules, quiet zone extra, not including the radius bite.
- If you brand it, keep the logo inside what error correction H can restore. A centre mark is recovered by correction, not by a special logo mode.
- For foil: foil around white patch. Print the symbol on solid white, then foil the rest. Modules in foil scatter.
- Export SVG or 300 dpi PNG/PDF at the true millimetre size. No /qr-preview screenshot.
- Print a single card proof. Scan on the finished stock, then try a stack of cards in frame to see which symbol the camera picks.
$1.99, $29, $97, $197. No unpaid tier. QR with logo is optional and makes the pattern denser at H.
How small can a vCard be on a business card?
Not smaller than the 2 cm working floor at 30 cm. Designers try 12 mm to save the back for a manifesto. Phones fail that more often than they fail a 22 mm mark with a real quiet zone.
If the card is too small for 2 cm plus four modules, you do not have a QR card. You have a pretty square. Drop a line of type, not four modules of quiet zone.
A website QR on the same card is a second symbol. Two marks in one camera frame return one result.
Can foil or round corners break the scan?
Yes. Metallic grounds scatter. Emboss and letterpress break module edges; keep QR on a flat inked area. Rounded corner quiet zone failures look like a "design-approved" card that never locks.
Dark stock needs a light patch first. Inverting colours is legal only when finders stay dark-on-light as the camera expects, or when the whole symbol is a true invert the reader can renormalise.
Do you reprint the box when the mobile number changes?
Not for hosted vCard. Edit the landing page. The box of cards already in pockets keeps working. That is the reason not to static-encode the vCard unless the person is a statue.
Reprint for fade, scuff, and a static Canva original. Hosted codes still depend on the provider resolving the URL.
Analytics: totals, device, country. Not who saved the contact.
Paused pages stop. Archived pages keep scanning.
Offset and letterpress cards want the symbol on a flat inked area. Deep texture breaks module edges. If the rest of the card is letterpress, knock out a smooth patch for the QR.
Spot-colour jobs should treat dark modules as 100 percent of one ink. A four-colour build that fringes on register turns sharp modules into grey. Ask the printer for a 1-bit or vector QR, not a photograph of a screen.
Round corners: measure the quiet zone after the die-cut, not on the rectangular proof. The radius eats the corner modules. Move the symbol inward until four empty modules survive the round.
Stacks in a wallet: D68, the reader typically returns one symbol, not an average. If you hand two cards at once, the camera may pick the neighbour. Fan them.
Apparel-sized "cards" sewn to a tote are D22. Stretch and wash need a larger symbol than 2 cm. Better: a paper insert.
When you add a logo, you are spending error correction. If the logo covers more than H can restore, finders still look fine and the save still fails. Shrink the logo or drop it.
What the card printer needs in the brief
Name the millimetre size of the symbol, the quiet zone, error correction H if logoed, SVG or 300 dpi at that size, dark modules as 100 percent of one ink, white patch if the stock is dark or foil. Say the radius must not bite the quiet zone.
Ask for a press proof on the live stock. Scan it on iOS Camera and Android Camera / Google Lens. Then run the box. If the stock is uncoated, expect spread and size up. If the stock is foil-heavy, insist on the white patch in writing.
Hosted vCard means the box already in pockets can pick up a new mobile number. Static Canva means the box is a snapshot. Pick before you order 1,000.
Two cards fanned in one camera frame return one symbol. Hand one card.
Print a Canva static vCard for a one-run conference badge
A Canva one-off or other free static generator is the right tool when the contact is frozen and uncounted: a volunteer day badge, a one-run zine insert. Paying $1.99 to host a name you will never change is optional.
Do not foil a static vCard you will have to pulp when the mobile number ports. Do not shrink below 2 cm to win a design award the camera cannot read. ISO/IEC 18004 does not grade taste.
Uncoated visiting cards drink toner. Modules spread into the quiet zone. Use coated stock or a larger symbol. Gloss cards under banquet lighting flare; a matte varnish on the QR patch is the usual printer conversation. If the front is full-bleed photo, put the symbol on a white panel on the back, not in the photograph. A camera cannot treat a busy print as light modules. Dark wood-effect grounds need the same white panel. Hand one card at a time so a stack of cards in frame does not steal the scan. Hosted landing pages still let you change TEL after the box ships. Static files do not. $1.99 is optional when Canva already drew the one-run volunteer badge. Offset cards still want vector, 100 percent of one ink, and a quiet zone the die has not bitten. Hand one card. Scan the live stock. Then run the box. If the radius bites a finder, move the symbol inward before you order 1,000. Keep 2 cm after that move. Then scan the live card.
Questions this raises
Keep the symbol above 2 cm across and the quiet zone inside the card edge, not bled off a rounded corner.
Yes. Foil around white patch, not modules in foil. Rounded corner quiet zone must stay empty.
Not if the code is a hosted vCard landing page. Edit the fields. Reprint if the card was a Canva static vCard.
The reader typically returns one symbol per frame. A stack of cards in frame can look like a broken code.
