How to make a custom QR code

SmartQRCode editorial · Updated October 2026

How to make a custom QR code means the Landing Page type with a beta product badge: a block based page you assemble and print. Edit after ink. If you need a paragraph or a menu, pick those types. Canva is enough for one immortal URL.

How to make a custom QR code

Custom is one of 17 types. The picker label is Landing Page. The badge is beta. That is a product fact, not a mood. You get Appearance (Theme Color, Font Style), a Header group (optional square Header Icon/Logo, required Page Title, optional Subtitle, header size select with Medium, Large, or X-Large), and a smart blocks editor that is not a row of ordinary form fields. The scan opens that page. Encoding is landing-page, editable after print, with scan analytics. It is not a redirect.

Do not pick Custom to put a logo in the modules. Logo, colours, gradients, patterns, and frames exist on other types. Do not pick Custom because the generator marketing page is named custom. That page is about dressing a pattern. This type is a hosted page of blocks.

Skip Custom when Simple Text or Menu already matches the job. Those field sets are the finished tools. Skip it when one URL is immortal and uncounted. A free static generator is then the honest one-off. Paid options are $1.99, $29, $97, or $197. There is no unpaid tier. Hosted pages last as long as we resolve them.

Pick Landing Page while it still shows beta

  1. In create, choose Landing Page. Confirm the beta badge. If you wanted Social Media or Menu, back out.
  2. Set Page Title. This field is required. My Custom Page is a placeholder.
  3. Add Subtitle only if one line earns its place.
  4. Choose Header Size: md Medium, lg Large, or xl X-Large. This is the header size select, not a print millimetre.
  5. Upload Header Icon/Logo as a square if you have a mark for the page header. Keep module logos small and use higher error correction if you also brand the symbol.
  6. Build the page in the block editor. Empty blocks print a paid code that opens a shell. Add the blocks scanners should see.
  7. Scan the live code after payment. The unpaid preview is /qr-preview. Do not plate it.
  8. Export SVG or 300 dpi PNG or PDF. Print at least 2 cm across for a phone at about 30 cm. Keep the quiet zone.

The custom generator sits with other design-led pages. The type you want in the wizard is still Landing Page. A Website URL is simpler if the real page already lives on your site.

What beta means on this type

what beta means on this type is the badge on the type card. Treat the editor as a product that may still change. Do not promise a client a frozen block catalogue. If the job is a known shape, use the typed tool: text for a paragraph, Menu for dishes, Social Media for the six networks. Custom is for the leftover page you cannot file elsewhere.

Product launches sometimes need a one-off page that is not a menu and not a tree. That is the case for blocks. A launch with a single immortal URL should still be a static file.

When Menu or Text is the better type

when Menu or Text is the better type is almost always, if those nouns describe the content. A block page that imitates a menu will miss category items, one-per-line dishes, and the optional menu PDF. A block page that imitates a note will miss the text size picker and the eight-row body. Use the type that owns the fields.

Website URL wins when the destination is already a page you maintain. Custom wins when you do not want that site and you accept beta.

Empty blocks after a paid print

The failure that is unique to this type is a beautiful header over nothing. Title was always required. Blocks are the content. If scanners report a blank page, open the editor, not the print file. The code scanned. The page was empty.

A header logo that covers more of the printed symbol than error correction can restore is a different failure: finders visible, payload unrestored. Shrink the module logo. Test at the real distance.

Do not send a screenshot of the block canvas to the printer. That is a raster of UI chrome. Send SVG or a high-resolution export of the symbol.

Logo on the modules is a different job from blocks

Logo, colours, gradients, and frames exist on every type. Custom is a landing page of blocks with a beta badge. Mixing those jobs is how people pick Custom when they wanted a branded Website URL. If you only need a mark in the squares, stay on the type that matches the payload and add a small centre logo with H correction. Test at the real distance. If the logo covers more than the level can restore, finders can still show and the code still fails.

A hosted block page lasts as long as we resolve the URL. Pause stops the page. Archive keeps scans working. An unpaid invoice is a physically perfect print that goes dark. That is the hosted trade. A static URL in Canva has no such dependency and no such edit.

Header Size md, lg, or xl is a landing control. It does not change print millimetres. Print size is still the 2 cm floor at about 30 cm, larger for a window. Quiet zone: four modules. Export SVG or 300 dpi PDF. Keep /qr-preview off the plate.

A typed type, or Canva, instead of blocks

If the payload is one URL that will never move, encode it in Canva or an in-app generator and skip us. If the payload is a paragraph, use Simple Text. If it is a menu, use Menu. If it is a tree, use Social Media.

Use Custom when you need a block based page and you accept the beta product badge. Export a printer file. Keep /qr-preview off the plate. Do not treat logo-on-modules as this type.

Questions this raises

The Landing Page type carries a beta product badge. It is a block-based page, still labeled beta, not a finished menu or text type.

When you have dishes, a paragraph, or a known field set. Custom is for a page you assemble from blocks, not for those jobs.

No. The on-screen preview encodes /qr-preview, not the live payload. Export after payment.

No. Logo and colours exist on every type. Custom is a landing-page type with a block editor.

Yes. The modules encode a SmartQRCode URL. The page content can change without a reprint.
