How to make a text QR code

SmartQRCode editorial · Updated October 2026

How to make a text QR code that opens a hosted paragraph, not bytes trapped in the squares. Set a title, paste the body, pick a text size, then print. Rewrite the note after the sticker is up. If the sentence is frozen and uncounted, a static encoder in Canva is enough.

How to make a text QR code

The Simple Text type is a landing page with title and body fields. Title is required. Your Text is a required textarea, eight rows in the form. Appearance includes Theme Color, Button Color, Font Style, and a font size picker. The modules encode a SmartQRCode URL. The words live on the page. That is why queue signs, door notes, and classroom instructions can change at lunch without a new print run.

Do not use this type for a restaurant menu. Categories and dishes belong on the Menu type. Do not use it for a block-built page. That is custom, still a beta badge. Do not use it when you need the phone to show the words with no network. Hosted text needs a connection. A static text QR stores the payload in the modules and can be read offline, and it cannot be edited after ink.

Paid options are $1.99, $29, $97, or $197. There is no unpaid tier. The plain text QR code how to is the sibling that argues hosted versus static at more length.

Set title, body, and text size

  1. Pick Simple Text in create. Website URL is a link, not a paragraph.
  2. Enter Title. My Message is a placeholder. Use the words the scanner should see first.
  3. Paste Your Text. This is the queue instruction copy or the door note. One dish per line is a menu job. Here it is a paragraph.
  4. Set Text Size with the font size picker so a standing reader can see it. Do not rely on pinch-zoom as the design.
  5. Set Theme Color, Button Color, and Font Style if the page should match a brand. These dress the landing, not the modules.
  6. Scan the live code after payment. The unpaid preview encodes /qr-preview.
  7. Export SVG for vinyl, or 300 dpi PNG or PDF for toner. Print at least 2 cm across for a phone at about 30 cm. Keep four modules of quiet zone.
  8. Test with iOS Camera or Android Camera / Google Lens. Confirm the wording, rather than stopping when a page merely opens.

The text QR code generator is the tool. Education handouts are a common placement when this week's instruction is not last week's.

Are the words stored in the modules

are the words stored in the modules is no. A static text encoder puts the sentence in the pattern. Longer copy raises the QR version, packs more modules, and prints denser at the same millimetre size. Our type does not do that. Density is the short hosted URL. You can write a longer note without making the sticker busier.

That is the useful split. A three-word warning that will never change can live in the modules. A paragraph that will change at 8am should not. If you bake a long notice into a static symbol, you also bake a dense pattern that needs more print size to stay readable.

How long can the body be on a phone

how long can the body be on a phone is a readability limit, not a hidden character cap we advertise as a number. The textarea is eight rows. Treat it as a page, not a tweet, and not a PDF. If scanners must pinch twice, you wrote too much. Split the job: a custom landing if you truly need blocks, or a Website URL to a real page if you need articles.

All-caps emergency copy looks loud and scans as a wall. Sentence case, short lines, and a title that names the action work better on a lock-screen banner. We do not promise a specific lock-screen UI.

Scan analytics still apply: totals, device, country. They do not prove the person read the paragraph.

Copy that overflows a phone

Yesterday's opening hours in today's sticker is the failure this type exists to prevent. Edit the body. The print stays. If you instead encoded the hours in a static symbol, you reprint.

A blank Your Text cannot ship. Both title and body are required. If you later clear the body in the dashboard, scanners get a heading over nothing. Put words back or pause the code.

Dark text on a dark landing theme is a page design error, not a QR error. The symbol can still scan. The paragraph can still be unreadable. Check contrast on the phone, rather than stopping at a calibrated monitor.

Do not send the printer a photo of the editor. Vector or high-resolution raster at the final size. A logo in the modules needs error correction high enough to restore the covered centre without eating the finders.

Classroom and corridor signs change weekly. That is why education handouts fit this type. Print the symbol once. Rewrite Monday's instruction on Sunday night. A static paragraph in the modules cannot do that without a new sticker run. Hosted text can. It also needs a network in the corridor. If the basement has none, you are back to a static encoder for the few words that must work offline.

PNG, JPG, SVG, and PDF are the download set. Vinyl wants SVG. Toner wants 300 dpi at the millimetre size. Quiet zone: four empty modules on every side, not type butted to the pattern.

When a static text encoder is enough

when a static text encoder is enough is a one-line warning that will not change and will not be counted: wet floor, staff only, the Wi-Fi password written as text rather than a Wi-Fi type. Generate that in Canva, Google's tools, or the phone. You will not get a dashboard. You will not edit the sentence. You also will not depend on us to resolve a URL.

Use hosted Simple Text when the note will move, when you want a scan count, or when the copy is long enough that putting it in the modules would densify the pattern. Keep /qr-preview off the plate. Keep the quiet zone. Pay $1.99 only if you actually need the hosted page.

Questions this raises

No. The pattern points at a hosted paragraph. That is why you can edit the copy after print.

The Your Text field is an eight-row textarea. Keep it readable standing up. It is a page, not a novel.

When a short sentence will never change and you do not need scan counts. Encode the words in a free static generator.

The hosted page needs a network. A static text QR from another tool can show its payload without one.

No. Dishes and categories belong on the Menu type. Text is a title plus a body.
