How to make a location QR code
SmartQRCode editorial · Updated October 2026
How to make a location QR code: use the location type, set the place, and print a hosted redirect at least 2 cm across. The scan opens the phone maps app handoff. You can move the pin later. A Canva one-off static maps URL is enough when the venue will never move and you will not count scans.
How to make a location QR code the maps app can open
Location is a redirect, with website, WhatsApp, and Google review. It is not a landing page and not Wi-Fi. The modules encode a SmartQRCode URL. The phone then opens whatever maps app it has set. geo versus maps URL is a payload detail; the guest still lands in a maps client, not in a SmartQRCode brochure.
This is the wrong type for a Google review form, a PDF spec sheet, or a Wi-Fi join. It is the wrong spend for a church that has sat on the same corner for a century and will never need counts. Encode that address in Canva as a static maps URL.
Yard signs are the usual stress test: street distance, weather, and a listing that will change. A static "this house" payload is wrong the day the office moves the viewing to the annex. Hosted pin retarget after print is the usual fit. See real estate.
Start at 2 cm for a phone at about 30 cm. A board read from the pavement needs several times that.
Pin the place, then export for the board
- Open the location QR generator and set the place you want the maps app to open.
- Confirm you did not pick website or Google review by mistake.
- Set error correction H for outdoor boards and logos; M is enough on a clean indoor 2 cm card with no logo.
- Quiet zone four modules, inside the board edge, not bled off a rounded corner.
- Export SVG for vinyl and coroplast, or 300 dpi PNG/PDF at the real millimetre size. No screenshot of /qr-preview.
- Print a proof at the size it will appear. Scan from the real viewing distance rather than a desk-only check.
- Check iOS Apple Maps default and an Android maps client. Do not assume Google Maps on every iPhone.
$1.99, $29, $97, $197. No unpaid tier. A website QR is the sibling redirect if you needed a listing page instead of a pin.
Which maps app opens from a location QR?
Phone maps app handoff follows the OS. iOS Apple Maps default is common. Android often opens Google Maps. There is no product setting that forces Google Maps on iPhone. Write "opens maps" on the sign, not "opens Google Maps," unless you have tested the phones your buyers actually carry.
Offline tiles are not cached by the QR. The phone still needs enough network to open maps.
Country in analytics is a request header, not a GPS trace of the scanner standing at the board.
More on street-scale print: maps location QR code how to. WhatsApp on the same board is a second redirect: WhatsApp QR prefilled message.
Can you move the pin after the yard sign is up?
Yes. Pin retarget after print is the hosted path. Change the place in the dashboard. The next scan follows a 302. A 301 would cache the old pin.
No, if the sign is a Canva static maps URL. The coordinates live in the modules. A price drop that also moves the viewing hut needs a new print on that path.
Hosted codes depend on the provider resolving the URL. A static maps QR has no such dependency and no such edit.
Paused codes stop redirecting. Archived codes keep scanning.
Pins that open the wrong building
The camera can succeed while the pin is a dropped marker on the wrong unit of a business park. Verify the destination in maps before you plate 200 boards.
Print still fails on its own terms: size too small for D21 distance, scuffed coroplast without error correction H, dark wood as a ground with no light patch, or /qr-preview screenshots.
Two codes on one stake (location plus Wi-Fi) confuse a single camera frame. The reader typically returns one symbol.
Transparent window film needs a white backing so the street is not the light modules.
Indoor pins (a reception desk card) and street boards (a for-sale stake) are the same type and different sizes. Do not reuse the 2 cm reception file on the stake. Viewing distance scales roughly with size. A window decal read from the pavement needs several times 2 cm.
geo: schemes and maps https URLs both end in "the maps app." They do not end in a guaranteed vendor. Write the sign copy as "opens maps." If your buyers are known to be Android-only, you can still test; do not print a lie on iOS.
A dropped pin on a retail park with twelve units is the usual wrong-building failure. Walk the pin in the maps app until the label is the unit, not the park. Then paste that place into the generator. Scanning a wrong pin at 4 cm still opens the wrong unit.
Weather on coroplast: use H correction, a size for the real distance, and a reprint cycle when UV chalks the ink. Hosted pins can change destination; faded modules cannot change themselves.
If the listing is a PDF brochure, that is the PDF landing type, not location. If the listing is a Google review ask, that is google_review. Location is the pin.
Indoor cards versus the stake at the kerb
The same pin can live on a 2.2 cm reception card and a 12 cm stake. Those are two export sizes, not two types. Do not upscale a 400 px PNG for the stake. Export SVG and set the millimetre size for the kerb.
Test Apple Maps and an Android maps client before you plate. Copy on the board should say the scan opens maps, not a named vendor.
If the viewing moves from the house to the annex, hosted pin retarget is a dashboard change. If you also change the brochure PDF, that is a second code (PDF landing type) or a website redirect, not a second pin on the same stake in one camera frame.
Quiet zone four modules. H correction outdoors. No /qr-preview. 302 for edits. Pause stops the pin; archive does not. If the stake is read from a car, treat the millimetre size as a lane problem, not a flyer problem. Export SVG at that size. Scan from the lane if cars are the audience.
Use a Canva maps URL when the site is permanent
A Canva one-off or other free static generator is the right tool for a venue that will not move and scans you will not count: a carved plaque, a one-run festival map with a single gate. ISO/IEC 18004 still applies.
Do not host a pin on $1.99 that you will never touch. Do not static-encode a show home that will relocate in six weeks. Pick the class before you pick a frame colour. Export the stake as SVG at the kerb millimetre size, not as an upscaled phone screenshot.

Whatever the phone has set. iOS Apple Maps default is common. There is no guarantee of Google Maps on iPhone.
Yes on this redirect type. Pin retarget after print is a dashboard change. Scans follow a 302.
When the venue is permanent and you do not need scan counts. A free static generator is the one-off tool.
No. Country may come from request headers. The pin is the destination, not the person.
