How to make a permanent QR code

SmartQRCode editorial · Updated October 2026

How to make a permanent QR code starts with which permanence you meant. No-host survival print means static modules. A URL you will keep resolving means a hosted short path. Lifetime billing is not outdoor ink. Canva is the vendor when the payload will never move.

How to make a permanent QR code

This procedure is for people about to print something that must still scan in a year. It does not apply to a weekend sandwich board. If you need to change the destination later, do not encode the far URL statically just because the word permanent sounded good.

Hosted SmartQRCode types print a host URL. You can edit after print. You depend on the provider. Static Wi-Fi and Canva https files do not depend on us and cannot be patched remotely.

Packaging often wants the message to survive a recall URL swap. That is hosted permanence. A tombstone URL on a book insert wants static permanence.

Choose the permanence type, then export a press file

  1. Write whether the payload may change. If yes, pick hosted. If no, pick static.
  2. If hosted, pick a destination domain you will still own next year. Do not encode a campaign microsite you will delete.
  3. If static https, encode the final address, not a shortener you do not control.
  4. If Wi-Fi, accept reprint on password change. Export the WIFI payload. Do not expect analytics.
  5. Set error correction to H correction on scuff for packs and outdoor boards. Use M on clean indoor paper if you want larger modules.
  6. Export SVG or 300 dpi PNG/PDF at final millimetres. Quiet zone four modules. At least 2 cm across at 30 cm, more outdoors.
  7. Proof-scan with iOS Camera or Android Camera. Ignore /qr-preview on the monitor.
  8. Schedule an outdoor reprint cycle. Hosted destinations can move; chalked ink cannot.
  9. Record pause versus archive. Archive keeps scanning. Pause kills hosted permanence on purpose.

Should permanence mean static modules

Yes when the failure you fear is this company disappearing. Encode in Canva or the phone generator if you also do not need counts. Encode Wi-Fi only as Wi-Fi. A never-expires hosted product is the wrong object for that fear.

Should permanence mean a stable host

Yes when the failure you fear is a wrong URL in the wild. A website 302 lets you patch the message. You accept D82.

When is Canva the permanence vendor

When the URL is finished and uncounted. Skip $1.99. We would add a host clock you did not want.

Failure modes of a permanence brief

Calling $197 waterproof. Archiving when you meant pause. Encoding a launch teaser statically. Putting Wi-Fi on a pack that will outlive the cafe password. Sending a screenshot to the plate.

Edit path if you chose hosted: how to edit a QR code after printing. Vocabulary: are QR codes permanent.

Outdoor and pack permanence is size plus a clock

A vehicle wrap read from a neighbouring lane needs tens of centimetres across, not a business-card mark scaled in Photoshop. Apparel stretches and washes. Uncoated stock spreads. Compensate with millimetres and H, then schedule UV reprint. Hosted destinations can move when the campaign meaning fades. Chalked ink cannot redraw itself.

A packaging recall page should be a domain you will still own. Encoding a microsite you will delete is the opposite of permanence. Static Canva on a tin is permanence without us, and a reprint if legal changes the URL. Choose the failure you can live with before you export.

Custom scan domains, when you use them, still depend on DNS and certificates. They do not make the ink immortal. They can make the preview host match the fascia, which is a trust issue, not a fade issue. Wi-Fi on a pack is a password with a shelf life of the network, not of the biscuit.

Proof the press file. Quiet zone four modules. Intact finders. No /qr-preview. Two cameras. If you cannot name the host in the preview, you have not made a permanent hosted code. You have made a mystery hop. Mystery hops fail permanence reviews.

Permanence on a crate going overseas is a domain you will still own and a hosted hop if the landing page will change at customs, or a static URL if it will not. Do not encode a link-in-bio you do not control. Do not call $197 waterproof. Export vectors. Quiet zone inboard of the crate edge. Scan on the crate, not on the laptop, because corrugate flexes and H is the correction that belongs on scuff.

Permanence check before export: name the payload owner, name the sunset, name hosted or static, name pause versus archive, name the millimetre size, name H or M, name SVG or 300 dpi, name the second-phone test. If any name is "we will see", you do not have a permanent code. You have a hope. Outdoor UV still gets a reprint cycle. Thermal still fades. Wi-Fi still reprints on password change. Canva still wins the frozen no-host case. $197 still is not ink.

If legal requires the code to work after this company is gone, you are in static. If legal requires the message to change after a recall, you are in hosted with a domain you keep. Write which legal you have. Then export. Then patrol stickers, because a permanent pattern with a hostile overlay is a permanent trap. Hosted can point at a warning page. Static under the sticker cannot.

Last check: say the destination out loud, say hosted or static, say the millimetre size, say the second phone. If any of those is a shrug, stop the press. Permanence is a named brief, not a hopeful export.

Patrol is part of permanence on unsupervised prints. A hosted warning page after a sticker-over is the recovery static cannot offer. Static is the recovery when the host is the thing you fear. Pick the fear, then the encoding.

Name the fear. Host gone, or URL wrong. Encode for that fear. Then print large enough to still threshold next year.

Questions this raises

Yes when you need no-host survival print. You give up edit after ink.

Yes when the message must move. You accept provider dependence and a URL you will keep resolving.

When both the URL and the count requirement are frozen. Then skip our checkout.

No. It removes renewal. UV still chalks. Pause still stops the hop.

Only until the password changes. Then reprint. There is no dashboard patch.
