How to make a wifi QR code
SmartQRCode editorial · Updated October 2026
How to make a wifi QR code: encode the SSID, the security type, and the password in the modules themselves. This is the only static type. It is not a redirect. Not editable after printing. Not trackable. A system Wi-Fi QR or a Canva one-off static file is often the right tool.
How to make a wifi QR code that actually joins
The phone reads a WIFI payload (byte mode in practice) and offers to join. Nothing is fetched from smart-qrcode.com. There is no 302, no destination field, and no dashboard retarget. Changing the network means printing a new symbol.
This is the wrong product class if you needed scan counts, a URL you can edit, or a landing page. Use website, WhatsApp, Google review, location, or a landing type for those jobs. Wi-Fi is F20: WPA, WPA2, or open.
Hotels put a card on the desk. Rotating the passphrase means a reprint, not an edit. See hotels and hospitality. Treat placement like a password on a whiteboard: whoever scans receives the key.
SSID case-sensitive match matters. Guest-WiFi and guest-wifi are different networks. A hidden SSID unsupported promise is honest: hidden SSIDs and some enterprise EAP networks are poorly supported in the convention. Do not sell them as a feature.
Print at least 2 cm across for a phone at about 30 cm. Do not screenshot /qr-preview; even on this type the on-screen mock is not the live payload.
Encode SSID, security, and password in the modules
- Open the Wi-Fi QR generator and type the SSID exactly, including case and spaces.
- Set WPA2 or open network to match the access point. WPA is also accepted. Do not pick WPA if the radio is open.
- Type the password as the AP expects it, or leave it empty only for open.
- Set error correction H if you add a logo via the QR with logo path or if the card will scuff; M on a clean 2 cm tent with no logo.
- Keep a four-module quiet zone. Do not write the password in type against the symbol edge.
- Export SVG or 300 dpi PNG/PDF at the real size. Never send a screenshot of /qr-preview.
- Test with a device that is not already joined. A phone already on the network is a false join on already connected.
- Laminate desk cards if they will be wiped. Reprint the whole card when the passphrase rotates.
$1.99, $29, $97, and $197 exist if you still want this generator. There is no unpaid tier. A phone OS Wi-Fi QR or Canva static file may be the whole job.
Which encryption types can a wifi QR encode?
WPA, WPA2, or open. The common convention looks like WIFI:T:WPA;S:YourSSID;P:password;; with a case-sensitive SSID. Enterprise networks that need a username and certificate cannot be encoded this way. Hidden SSIDs are a gamble; do not promise them.
Open networks encode without a password. Do not leave a WPA type selected with a blank password and call it open.
The payload is static. ISO/IEC 18004 still governs the pattern. Higher error correction survives more damage and makes a denser symbol at the same millimetre size.
For why counts do not exist, read wifi QR code not trackable. Do not pair this with a location redirect and expect one analytics column for both.
Can you change the password without printing a new card?
No. F71 and D80: a static symbol stores the payload in the modules. Dashboard edits belong to redirects and landing pages. Wi-Fi has neither.
If you expected a 302 retarget, you picked the wrong type. Make a website or location code for the thing you wanted to count or move. Keep Wi-Fi as a swappable tent card.
A hosted code of another type still depends on the provider. A Wi-Fi code does not, which is the only advantage of being static: no SaaS in the join path, and no way to count or edit.
Prints that look fine and still will not join
False join on already connected is the trap. Staff phones already on House-WiFi will "succeed" even when the SSID is misspelled. Use a guest phone with Wi-Fi off, or airplane mode then Wi-Fi only.
SSID case-sensitive match failures look like a bad password. Copy from the AP admin, not from memory.
Print: 2 cm floor, four-module quiet zone, no dark-on-dark without invert, logo within what error correction H can restore, no /qr-preview screenshot.
Two codes on one tent (menu plus Wi-Fi) can make the camera return the wrong symbol. Separate them.
Guest networks in cafes are often a different SSID from staff. Encoding the staff SSID on a public tent is a password leak, not a convenience. Use the guest SSID, a guest passphrase, and a card you can throw away when you rotate.
Open networks encode without a password. They also hand every scanner a join to an unencrypted radio. If you did not mean open, do not select open. A WPA2 network with a blank password in the form is invalid; the generator should refuse it. Type the key.
In-room hotel cards compete with a QR the TV firmware already shows. If the TV already joins guests, a second wifi square on the desk is duplicate static ink. If the TV code is wrong, reprinting our card will not fix the TV.
Enterprise EAP (username plus certificate) is outside the WIFI:T:WPA convention. Do not promise a join for office 802.1X. Give visitors a guest SSID or a captive portal page encoded as a website redirect, which is a different type with analytics.
Quiet zone on a laminated tent: wipe-down eats the edge if the lamination shrinks. Leave more than four modules of physical margin on the card, even if the spec-minimum is four modules in the symbol.
A phone in airplane mode with Wi-Fi enabled is a cleaner test than a phone that has twelve remembered networks. Remembered networks will auto-join and hide a bad payload.
Guest SSID on the tent, staff SSID nowhere near it
Print the guest network. Keep the staff key off table tents, window vinyl, and Airbnb welcome books that get photographed. A wifi QR is a key handoff.
Confirm with a phone that has never joined. Airplane mode, then Wi-Fi, then scan. Staff devices are a false join on already connected.
Hidden SSID and EAP are outside the promise. WPA, WPA2, or open. SSID case-sensitive match. Reprint on passphrase rotation. No scan analytics. No 302. No dashboard retarget.
Export SVG or 300 dpi PNG/PDF. 2 cm floor. Four-module quiet zone. Error correction H if logoed or wiped. Never plate /qr-preview.
A system Wi-Fi QR or Canva static file remains the default choice when you do not need this product's other types in the same kit.
Prefer the system Wi-Fi QR or a Canva static file
A system Wi-Fi QR (iOS / Android network sharing) or a Canva one-off static file is often the right tool. You will never edit this payload and you cannot count it here anyway. Paying $1.99 to draw a static square you could draw in Canva is optional, not required.
Use this product when you already want SmartQRCode exports (SVG, PDF) in the same brand kit as your other types, knowing the Wi-Fi one still will not track. Do not describe it as a redirect. Do not promise analytics.
Questions this raises
WPA, WPA2, or open. Enterprise EAP and many hidden SSIDs are poorly supported. Do not promise them.
No. The payload is in the modules. Not editable after printing. Not trackable. Reprint when the passphrase rotates.
False join on already connected. Confirm with a phone that is not on that network.
No. There is no server hop and no scan analytics for this type.
$1.99, $29, $97, or $197 if you use this product. A system Wi-Fi QR or Canva static file is often the right tool instead.
