QR code vector for print and cut
SmartQRCode editorial · Updated October 2026
QR code vector for print means sending SVG or a PDF that still contains paths, so the press can scale, cut, and ink the modules as geometry. It is not a screenshot, not an auto-traced PNG, and not EPS from this product. Vinyl cutters and spot-colour offset are why that file exists.
QR code vector for print, and when raster is wrong
Vector stays binary at any millimetre size. A screenshot of an on-screen preview is a raster of RGB pixels, often with UI chrome, and it encodes /qr-preview rather than the live payload. That file is the wrong thing to plate.
You are about to export SVG and, if the shop wants a page box, a PDF that has not flattened the symbol. This is the wrong job for a home inkjet of a 3 cm sticker on ordinary copy paper. A 300 dpi PNG at that millimetre size is enough there. It is also the wrong job for a one-off static URL that will never be edited or counted: generate that in Canva and stop.
Offset flexo vector is the brief when cartons and labels go on a press with a spot dark. Vinyl cutter paths are the brief when a plotter will cut the dark squares. SVG versus PNG is the wider choice; this page is the press-and-cutter procedure.
A website QR still needs the same geometry rules as a logo code. The logo is recovered by error correction, not by a special vector mode. If the mark covers more than H can restore, paths will not save the scan.
Build the vector file the press can plate
- Finish the destination on a hosted or static type before you export. Vectorising a moving URL twice is how two slightly different plots hit the cutter.
- Download SVG from SmartQRCode. That is the master among svg and pdf vectors. Do not capture the preview.
- If the shop asked for PDF, export PDF as well and confirm in their preflight that the symbol is still paths, not an embedded 72 dpi image.
- Place the file at the real millimetres. Keep a four-module quiet zone inside the trim. Do not outline the quiet zone with a stroke that the cutter will also plot.
- Convert dark modules to spot colour one ink at 100 percent if the estimate is offset or flexo. Do not build them as rich black.
- For vinyl, send vinyl cutter paths with finder squares as closed shapes. Ask the plotter shop not to simplify or round corners.
- Cut or plate one proof on the real material. Scan it. Then run the rest.
Dynamic hosting does not change the geometry. It changes whether you can retarget the URL without a second plot.
Why vinyl cutters reject a png qr
A PNG is a bitmap. Cutters follow paths. The shop traces the bitmap, and the trace is a guess around every module. QR needs sharp 90-degree corners and intact finder nests. Traces produce scallops, merged neighbours, and hairline bridges. Those fail more often than a slightly scuffed but geometrically true SVG plot.
Laser cutters have the same appetite for paths. A PNG sent to a laser is still traced or bitmapped onto a head that then burns grey. Burned grey is not a module.
If the job is a sticker run on a desktop cutter, SVG is still the file. Kiss-cut too tight into the quiet zone and the peel will take modules with it. Vector will not invent margin you did not leave.
How spot colour should treat the dark modules
Offset and flexo want vector. Spot-colour jobs should treat the dark modules as 100 percent of one ink, not a four-colour build that can fringing-register. A halo of cyan around black is enough for a phone to see dirt.
Do not put modules in foil. Metallic grounds scatter. Print the symbol on a solid white patch, then foil around it. Emboss, letterpress, and deep texture break module edges. Keep QR on a flat inked area even when the rest of the card is tactile.
Uncoated carton stock still spreads. Vector will not stop fibre swell. Size up or coat the panel. Packaging then has to scan on the formed pack, not merely on the flat vector proof.
Vector files that still fail on press
The PDF flattened at export. Preflight it. The cutter operator simplified paths to speed the job. Forbid simplification in the ticket. The quiet zone was converted to a cut line and peeled away. The logo was a separate raster dropped on top of SVG, misregistered by a millimetre, covering a finder. The live payload was never downloaded; someone traced the preview.
Outdoor UV ink chalks. A perfect vector plot still fades. Plan a reprint cycle. A hosted code can change destination; the faded vinyl cannot change itself.

How to preflight svg and pdf vectors before they leave
Open the SVG in a viewer that shows outlines. Finder squares should be closed. Modules should be rectangles, not circles from a rounding script. If a brand team ran "outline stroke" and "unite", check that alleys still exist. A united blob that used to be 177 tiny squares is no longer a QR symbol.
In the PDF, use the shop's preflight or a simple output preview. If the QR becomes a 72 dpi image XObject, you flattened it. Re-export from the SVG master. Spot colour names should match the ticket: one ink, 100 percent, no rich black, no registration colour.
Send a 1-up plot or a laser of the symbol at true millimetres on cheap vinyl or paper before the full cutter run. Scanning that cheap plot is cheaper than scanning a finished vehicle. The geometry bug shows up on the cheap plot.
If two people export SVG a week apart after someone edited the destination, you may cut two slightly different hosted URLs. Lock the code, then export once, then cut.
When a 300 dpi PNG is enough
Toner flyers, office labels, and a one-night A4 can take a millimetre-native PNG. If the payload is static forever and you do not need counts, a Canva file is the whole job. SmartQRCode has no unpaid plan. Use $197 or $97 when you want a hosted URL you can still edit; use a free static generator when you want ink that does not depend on us.
If the shop still demands EPS, read EPS format. We do not ship it. They convert from SVG.
Questions this raises
Cutters need vinyl cutter paths. A PNG is traced, and tracing QR modules produces broken corners and merged finders. Send SVG.
As 100 percent of one ink, not a four-colour build. CMYK fringing around modules is enough to fail a scan even when the proof looks black.
It can be, if the PDF still contains paths. A PDF that flattened the symbol into an image is a raster in a vector wrapper. Ask the shop which they will rip.
SmartQRCode exports PNG, JPG, SVG, and PDF, not EPS. The printer converts SVG or a vector PDF to EPS in their RIP. That step is theirs.
No. The preview encodes /qr-preview, and auto-trace of a screenshot is how corners die. Download SVG after you own the code.
