QR codes for warehouse bins on faces
SmartQRCode editorial · Updated October 2026
QR codes for warehouse bins belong on the pick face the picker already faces, at arm length, not in the graphic footer of the aisle end-cap. Host the slot page so a SKU move does not reprint every tote. A Canva one-off is enough for a frozen slot string that will never be counted.
How QR codes for warehouse bins should sit on a tote
The scanner is already holding a device and standing at the lip. Size can sit near the 2 cm rule for pick-path arm-length scans. Lighting is often overhead metal-halide or LED. Gloss laminate on bin-face laminate labels can glare the same way retail shelf-edge gloss does. Matte laminate is the usual fix.
Put the symbol on the face the picker sees, with a quiet zone of four modules inside the label edge, not bled off a rounded tote corner. Aisle-end location codes are a different distance. Those are read from the aisle, so they need more millimetres than the tote sticker. A location QR code can open the maps app the phone has set. There is no guarantee of Google Maps on iOS.
Host a website QR code or a PDF QR code when the slot contents will move. SKU swap without reprint is the reason to encode a SmartQRCode URL rather than the SKU bytes. This job does not apply if your WMS already owns the bin identity as a private barcode and you only wanted a human-readable backup that will never change. Canva or another free static generator is enough then.
Sibling jobs: QR codes for logistics on cartons, QR codes for manufacturing on travelers. Logistics placements collect dock and yard rules that bins do not need.
Label a bin face so a picker can scan it gloved
- Create one hosted code per slot you will retarget, not one code for the whole aisle. Two codes in one camera frame return one result.
- Set error correction to H if the tote scuffs or you add a tiny logo. H restores about 30 percent and densifies the pattern, so keep the millimetre size at or above 2 cm.
- Export SVG for any die-cut vinyl. For laser toner on paper labels, send a 300 dpi PNG of the final size. Do not screenshot the preview. It encodes a placeholder path.
- Print on coated or laminated stock. Uncoated bin card drinks ink and fattened modules.
- Place the symbol at the pick lip, chest height on flow rack, not on the underside of a shelf the picker never looks at.
- Proof-scan with the same glove and the same device the pick path uses, at arm length, under the real aisle lights.
- Keep guest Wi-Fi off the bin face. Wi-Fi is not editable after printing and not trackable. A phone already on that SSID will appear to succeed even when the payload is wrong.
- Paid options are $1.99, $29, $97, or $197.
Flow rack presents a second camera problem the tote lip does not. A picker standing in the aisle sees two bin-face laminate labels stacked in the same frame. Offset the labels so only one symbol sits at eye line. Gravity-fed cartons that rotate on the roll can put the mark on the underside. Print a duplicate on the opposite face or use a rigid card that stays oriented.
Replenishment is a different pause from picking. A slot that flips from bulk to split-case needs a hosted page, not a new laminate every hour. If you freeze the slot as a static SKU string, you accept that reprint. Frozen maps printed once a year can live in Canva. Live slot pages cannot.
Metal shelving behind a clear label becomes the light modules. Back with white. A dark tote with dark modules and no invert is unread. Apply a light patch first, then the symbol. Scan analytics on hosted types still cannot see a picker name or email.
How large should a warehouse bin QR be at arm length
Near 2 cm across the symbol, quiet zone excluded, when the phone is at the lip. If pickers stand in the centre of a wide aisle, treat it as a greater distance and grow the symbol. Viewing distance scales roughly with size. A 2 cm code on a 6 m rack end is invisible from the crossing.
Curved tote plastic distorts modules the same way a shrink pack does. Test-scan the formed tote, not the flat label proof on a desk. If the curve breaks finder squares, move the label to a flatter pocket or a rigid card insert.
Dark plastic totes as a ground fail when you print dark modules with no light patch. Apply a white label first. Inverting colours is legal only when finders remain dark-on-light or the whole symbol is a true invert the reader can renormalise.
Can you retarget a bin after the SKU moves
Yes, when the label encodes a hosted destination. Point the same modules at the new SKU page, the new pick instruction PDF, or a empty-slot warning. Static SKU strings cannot do that. Changing the payload means a new label.
Redirects use 302 so devices do not cache last week's SKU. Analytics on hosted types count scans, not unique pickers. Country and device come from headers and user-agent strings, not from a GPS chip in the tote.
A paused hosted code stops resolving. Archived codes keep scanning. If the warehouse cannot depend on any provider, freeze the SKU in the modules and accept reprint on every slot change.
Do not use a 200-character static URL with UTMs on a 2 cm tote. More payload means a higher version and a denser pattern at the same size. Hosted density is the short URL.
When bin labels scan at the desk and fail on the rack
Overhead glare on gloss laminate is the first bin-specific failure. Matte the symbol area. Dirt and stretch-wrap scuff want H, not a smaller logo.
A second label on the adjacent tote in the same frame makes the camera pick the wrong slot. Stagger faces or increase the quiet zone so only one symbol is in view at the lip.
Screenshot reprints add grey. Send vector or a 300 dpi file at the real millimetre size. ISO/IEC 18004 still governs the pattern. The WMS brand on the tote does not.
When a frozen slot string should stay in Canva
A Canva one-off or other free static generator is the right tool when the bin identity is permanent, you will never count scans, and a slot map printed once a year is enough. Hosting that frozen string on SmartQRCode wastes a paid option. Printing a new static label on every daily SKU swap wastes laminate and picker time.
QR codes for work orders is the folded-paper cousin of this job. Bins stay at the lip. Job cards leave the building.
A slot that is empty on Monday and bulk on Tuesday still wants a hosted page that can say empty. A static SKU string will keep sending pickers to last week's item. That is the decision, not a colour choice. Pick hosted when the slot moves. Pick Canva when the slot is the building grid itself.
Questions this raises
Near 2 cm across the symbol, quiet zone excluded, for pick-path arm-length scans. Grow it if the picker stands in the aisle rather than at the lip, or if the tote face is curved.
Yes with a hosted website or PDF destination. SKU swap without reprint is the point of encoding a SmartQRCode URL on the bin-face laminate labels. A static SKU string in the modules cannot move.
When the slot identity is permanent and you do not need scan counts. A Canva one-off or other free static generator is enough for that frozen string. Live slot maps and counted picks need a hosted code.
Aisle-end location codes are read from farther than a bin lip. Treat them closer to a posted A4 than to a 2 cm tote sticker. Maps destinations can stay hosted so a pad move does not reprint the end-cap.
No. Wi-Fi is not editable after printing and not trackable. Keep network credentials off the pick face. Confirm any office SSID code with a phone that is not already joined.
