Why did my QR code stop working
SmartQRCode editorial · Updated October 2026
Why did my QR code stop working is rarely "QR expired as a format." The usual cause is paused in the dashboard, a dead campaign URL, a cached 301 hop, or a faded outdoor board. Archive still scans. Static files fail when the payload is wrong or the ink is gone.
Why did my QR code stop working after a pause
Why did my QR code stop working is rarely a format timeout. Pause is the first hosted cause: the sticker looks new and the hop is off.
Cause: pause is a separate state from archive. Pause stops the hosted hop. The print can look perfect.
Fix: unpause, or point the destination at a living URL. Do not "restore" by duplicating a new code unless you want a reprint.
Confirm: scan with iOS Camera. Read the preview host. Open the far page. A website or dynamic type should 302 to the new destination. Check a second phone.
Dead campaign URL behind a healthy hop
Cause: the modules still encode a good host. The far site 404s, the certificate lapsed, or the event page was taken down.
Fix: change the destination. That is the point of hosted types. Logistics labels should point at a URL you will keep, not a week-long tracker.
Confirm: same two-phone scan. The dashboard may already show totals; totals do not prove the far page lives.
Cached 301 hop that ignores your edit
Cause: some hop in the stack issued 301. Browsers cache the old destination. This product uses 302 so our hop will not do that. An extra public shortener might.
Fix: remove the outer shortener. Send guests to the SmartQRCode URL. Wait out or clear client caches. Do not reprint yet.
Confirm: a phone that never scanned the old chain. If only the old phone fails, it was cache.
Faded outdoor board or a static payload that moved
Cause: UV chalk, scuff, or a Wi-Fi password rotation. Static modules cannot be patched from a dashboard. A Wi-Fi code is this case every time the network changes.
Fix: reprint. Use H correction and a size for the real distance. For Wi-Fi, test with a device that is not already on that network.
Confirm: the new proof scans; the old board still fails. Replace the old board.
Sticker-over or two codes in one frame
Cause: a physical overlay, or the camera picked a neighbour label.
Fix: peel, reprint, or isolate one symbol in the viewfinder.
Confirm: fingernail test, then a scan of the underprint.
When none of those worked
Export a new SVG or 300 dpi PNG. Do not screenshot /qr-preview. If the job never needed a host, make a Canva static file of the real https page and stop debugging a dashboard. If the job needs swaps, stay hosted and keep the destination yours. See how to edit a QR code after printing and do QR codes expire.
How to walk a dead poster without guessing
Start with Camera, not with a third-party app. Read the preview. If there is no lock, you have an optical failure: size, glare, invert, two codes, a screenshot of /qr-preview, cropped finders, or a logo that ate correction. Fix the file or the light. Confirm on a second phone at the real distance.
If the preview is our host and the hop fails, open pause versus archive. Unpause or restore the destination. Confirm with a phone that never saw a 301 wrapper. If the hop works and the far page is dead, edit the destination. That is hosted recovery. If the type is Wi-Fi, skip the dashboard. Reprint. Confirm off-network.
If nothing in that walk works, export SVG or 300 dpi PNG again. Do not photograph the monitor. If the campaign never needed a host, stop debugging us and print a Canva file of the real https page. If it needed swaps, stay hosted and keep the domain. Logistics labels should point at URLs you will keep, not at week-long trackers that vanish and look like expiry.
Write the four causes on a sticker on the facilities laptop: pause, dead far URL, 301 wrapper, faded optics. Walk them in that order. Confirm every fix with a second phone. Reprint only for static payloads and unreadable modules. Canva is the exit if you never needed a host. A host is the exit if you still need swaps.
Facilities should not reset the router because a tent failed. Camera first, preview second, pause third, far URL fourth, optics last. Wi-Fi skips to reprint. Second phone always. Canva exit if the brief never needed a hop.
If the second phone works and the first does not, you are not in expiry. You are in cache, dirt, Screen Time, or an OEM toggle. Fix the handset. If both fail the same way, you are in pause, dead URL, 301, optics, or Wi-Fi payload. Walk the list. Confirm. Reprint only when the list says reprint.
Questions this raises
Scan and read the preview. If the host is yours but the hop fails, check paused in the dashboard. If the host opens and the far page 404s, that is a dead campaign URL.
Use a second phone that has not cached the old page. Confirm the preview, then the far page, then a dashboard total if hosted.
When the modules are unreadable, the payload is static and wrong, or a sticker-over sits on the print.
No. Archive keeps scanning. Pause is the stop.
No. Reprint with the new password. Confirm on a phone that is not already on that network.
