How to make a QR code in Illustrator

SmartQRCode editorial · Updated October 2026

How to make a QR code in Illustrator is File Place, not Object, Graph, or a traced PNG. Download SVG from SmartQRCode, then File, Place onto an artboard set in millimetres. Vinyl cutters and laser cutters need cutter vector paths. The expand appearance trap turns clean modules into junk those machines cannot cut.

How to make a QR code in Illustrator without tracing a screenshot

Illustrator will Image Trace a photograph of a code. Tracing QR modules produces broken corners and grey slivers. That file will not scan and will not cut. Generate the pattern in SmartQRCode. A website QR code is the usual booth-link job. A custom QR or logo mark still exports SVG; Place that file rather than redrawing squares with the Pen tool.

How to make a QR code in Illustrator for laser-cut wood is still paths. Char on the edges is damage; spend H and enlarge. Test the burned piece, not the screen. If the shop only accepts DXF, export from the placed SVG without Expand Appearance. A traced PNG of the artboard is a second-generation fail. Place SVG.

Hosted types encode a SmartQRCode URL, so a vinyl that ships next month can still retarget. A static Canva widget saved as PNG and traced is frozen and usually unreadable. If the job is a one-night A4 that will never be counted, stay in Canva. If the job is a cutter, Place SVG.

Do not screenshot the unpaid canvas. Use the Download row: SVG first, PDF if a vendor asked for a page, PNG only as a raster proof.

Artboards named "logo" and "banner" in one AI file should not share a single 20 mm code. Place twice, size twice. A symbol copied from the logo artboard onto a 3-metre banner without Transform in millimetres is still 20 mm at the eye.

File Place Embed or link, then set Illustrator artboard millimetres

  1. On the SmartQRCode code page, Download SVG.
  2. In Illustrator, File, Place. Choose Link to keep a live path, or Embed if the AI must travel alone. Both beat paste.
  3. Click once. Do not drag a rectangle unless you hold Shift. A non-square place crops a finder.
  4. Window, Transform. Set Width to the finished millimetres of the decal. Desk-distance about 20 mm; trade-stand aisle distance is metres, so the symbol must be several times larger.
  5. Leave a four-module gutter of empty board around the pattern. Guides are fine. Type is not.
  6. Do not Object, Expand Appearance, or Image Trace. If you need a single colour, recolour with Recolor, keeping modules 100 percent of one ink.
  7. Save a copy for the cutter as SVG or AI with paths intact. Print a paper proof at 100 percent and scan before you cut vinyl.

EPS is a vendor request, not a better encoding. EPS notes cover that conversation. The payload is already in the SVG.

Should you embed or link the SVG

Link if you expect to Replace after a new Download. The Links panel then behaves like InDesign. Embed if a cutter shop will open the AI without your disk. Embedding a vector is still vector. Embedding a PNG is still a raster. Do not Place a PNG for a cutter job. A PNG sent to a cutter is traced, and tracing QR modules produces broken corners.

InDesign File Place is the layout twin. Illustrator is the paths twin. Photoshop is raster; do not flatten this job into a PSD if a cutter is next.

Why Expand Appearance ruins cutter paths

Expand is a habit from logo cleanup. On a placed QR it can explode modules into overlapping compounds, drop the quiet zone, or convert squares to outlines with hairline gaps. Cutters follow those outlines. Gaps become uncut bridges. Leave the placed SVG alone. If you must unify colour, use a spot swatch on the group, not Expand.

Live Trace / Image Trace on a screenshot is worse. You are asking the tracer to invent the spec.

Can Illustrator artwork stay hosted after vinyl

If the SVG encoded a hosted website type, the vinyl still points at SmartQRCode. Retarget in the dashboard. A static payload in the cut is frozen. Hosted codes last as long as the provider resolves them; a pause or an unpaid invoice can stop a physically perfect decal. That is the trade. A static cut has no such dependency and no such edit.

Recolor, outlines, and a cutter shop that asked for DXF

Cutter shops ask for DXF, EPS, or outlined AI. Outlining type is fine. Outlining a placed QR SVG by converting it to a mess of compound paths is how modules gain hairline gaps. If the shop cannot take SVG, export a copy as EPS without expanding, or Place the SVG in a new AI they specified, still without Expand Appearance. If they trace your PNG anyway, stop and send paths.

Recolor Artwork is allowed when you keep modules as 100 percent of one spot. Tints, gradients, and a second colour inside a module are not. A logo in the centre can be a separate placed group; it still spends error-correction budget. Do not Recolor the finders to a light grey to match a muted brand palette. Finders need contrast.

Artboards for a 3-metre banner should be the banner millimetres, with the code sized for aisle distance, not copied from a 20 mm business-card artboard and scaled in the RIP. Scaling in the RIP of a raster is grey. Scaling vectors is the point of File Place SVG.

If the booth graphic also needs a hosted website type, Place that SVG. A static Canva PNG traced for the same banner will not retarget when the demo URL changes at lunch.

Save a PDF/X proof for the human scan, and a paths file for the cutter. Scan the printed proof, not the Illustrator outline view. Outline view always looks sharp.

A vehicle wrap is not a poster. The first read is from a neighbouring lane. Tens of centimetres across the symbol, not 2 cm. Curve distorts modules; test-scan the formed wrap, not the flat proof. If the wrap vendor only accepts PNG, give them a 300 dpi PNG of the final millimetres, not a screenshot of the artboard at 72 dpi. Prefer they take SVG. How to make a QR code in Illustrator for that job is still File Place SVG first.

When Canva is the better encoder than Illustrator

A one-off social tile or an internal notice that will never be counted or cut belongs in Canva's static QR widget. Illustrator wins when artboards are millimetres, when a cutter will run, or when a booth graphic must scale without grey. For those files, File Place SVG from SmartQRCode, with Expand Appearance left alone, is the method.

If the cutter shop quotes from a PNG mock, that quote is for a traced job. Send the SVG before they start. A second-generation trace of your mock will not match the placed paths. Stand at the booth distance with a phone after the vinyl is up. A shop-table scan of a flat sheet is not an aisle scan of a curved wrap.

Questions this raises

Link if you may Replace from a later SmartQRCode Download. Embed if the AI file must travel without the original SVG. Either way, Place the file. Do not paste a bitmap.

Expand can split modules into compound junk a vinyl cutter traces as broken corners. Leave the placed SVG as paths. Cutters need those paths, not a PNG trace.

If the placed SVG encoded a hosted website type, retargeting does not require a new cut. A static payload in the vinyl is frozen.

A one-off social graphic that will never be counted or cut can use Canva static QR widget. Illustrator is for artboards in millimetres, vinyl, and laser paths.

Set the artboard to the finished millimetres of the decal. Desk-distance marks want about 20 mm across the symbol. Aisle banners need several times that.
