How to make a QR code in InDesign

SmartQRCode editorial · Updated October 2026

How to make a QR code in InDesign is a File Place SVG job. Download SVG from the SmartQRCode code page, then File, Place into a square frame. Keep the InDesign Links panel showing a live path. Type, foil, and trim must not eat the four-module quiet zone.

How to make a QR code in InDesign without the Object QR gimmick

InDesign can generate a barcode-like mark from a string. That mark is a static payload with no scan totals and no retarget. It is acceptable for a one-night programme. It is the wrong encoder for a menu QR code you will reprice, or a website QR on packaging that will outlive a campaign URL. Generate hosted in SmartQRCode, then Place the SVG.

How to make a QR code in InDesign for a book jacket is still Place, then keep the frame off the bleed. A jacket flap that trims 3 mm will shave quiet zone if you parked the mark on the guide.

Canva's built-in QR is the same static class. If the job is a classroom poster that will never be counted, stay in Canva. If the job is a packaged InDesign file going to a printer, Place a SmartQRCode SVG so the Links panel can relink when the destination file is replaced.

Do not screenshot the editor preview. Download SVG (or PDF) from the code page. PNG is the fallback when a vendor refuses vectors, sized to final millimetres at 300 dpi or higher.

A QR code on a pasteboard at 20 percent view will look sharp and still be 9 mm on the page. Always read the frame width in millimetres in the Control panel, not the zoom percentage. If the document uses mixed page sizes, check the code on the page that will actually print, not on A-master.

File Place SVG, then lock a square frame

  1. On the SmartQRCode code page, Download SVG. Keep the filename unique so Links does not collide with last month's file.
  2. In InDesign, File, Place. Click a square frame, or drag a square. Hold Shift if you drag so the frame cannot become a rectangle.
  3. Open Object, Fitting. Choose Fit Content Proportionally. Avoid Object Fitting Fill Frame unless you have already confirmed no finder is cropped.
  4. Set the frame width in millimetres to the finished size. Desk-distance paper wants about 20 mm across the symbol; packaging and aisle distance need more.
  5. Leave a light gutter inside the frame equal to four modules. Do not put the frame on the bleed. Trim will shave quiet zone.
  6. Window, Links. Confirm the SVG is Linked, not Embedded, so a later Download can Replace.
  7. Export PDF/X for the printer. Print a paper proof at 100 percent. Scan from the real viewing distance, not from the monitor.

Vinyl cutters and laser cutters need those vector paths. A PNG sent to a cutter is traced, and tracing QR modules produces broken corners.

Why File Place SVG beats a pasted PNG

Paste puts pixels on the pasteboard. Scale that paste from a business card to a carton and InDesign interpolates grey. Vector SVG scales without adding grey. Offset and flexo want the dark modules as 100 percent of one ink, not a four-colour build that can fringing-register. Spot-colour jobs should treat the placed SVG as a single swatch, not as an RGB screenshot.

Illustrator placement is the sister workflow: File, Place, embed or link. Vector export rules cover the printer conversation. Photoshop is raster; do not route an InDesign job through a flattened PSD if you can Place SVG.

Does Object Fitting Fill Frame smear modules

Fill Frame Proportionally is built for photographs you are willing to crop. Cropping a finder is the most common reason a code that looks fine will not scan. Fit Content Proportionally inside a square frame keeps all three nested squares. If the layout demands a non-square hole, the code does not belong in that hole. Move the caption.

A logo in the centre is recovered by error correction, not by a special InDesign mode. If the logo is larger than the chosen level can restore, finders may still be visible and the code still fails.

Can an InDesign package keep a hosted destination

Package collects the linked SVG. The SVG still encodes a SmartQRCode URL if you generated a hosted type. Retargeting happens in the dashboard, not in the INDD. A static InDesign-generated barcode cannot be retargeted. If the printer already plated a static mark, you reprint. For packaging hosted is the usual fit because the carton outlives the first URL.

A provider shutdown, an unpaid invoice, or a pause can stop a physically perfect print. That is the trade for editability. A static mark has no such dependency and no such edit.

Preflight, package, and a missing SVG on the printer's disk

InDesign Package is where jobs die. The Links panel shows OK on your machine because the SVG sits on a desktop folder. Package to a drive, then open the packaged INDD on a second machine before you send. If Links shows Missing, File, Place again from the packaged Links folder. Relink, do not Embed a stale PNG to "just get it out."

Preflight profiles that only check image resolution will pass a 72 dpi paste and fail a vector SVG, or the reverse. Add a note on the slug: QR is linked SVG, do not rasterise. Bleed versus quiet zone belongs on that note too: the frame sits inside live area, not on the bleed guide.

For a menu you will reprice, Replace the SVG only if you generated a new static file. If the type is hosted, you do not Replace; you retarget. Printers who insist on a new link for every price change are solving a static problem you no longer have.

Spot-colour jobs should map dark modules to 100 percent of one ink. A four-colour build of an RGB PNG fringes on press and the camera reads the fringe as damage. If the printer wants a 1-bit TIFF, that conversion happens at RIP from vector, not from a screenshot.

Overprint preview can hide a white quiet zone sitting on a cream ground that looked fine in RGB. Check separations. Then print a paper proof at 100 percent and scan from the real viewing distance of the pack, not from the studio stool.

When Canva is enough instead of InDesign

A one-off poster, a birthday invite, or an internal notice that will never be counted and will never see a RIP belongs in Canva's static widget. InDesign wins when you have bleed, Links, preflight, and a commercial printer. For those jobs, File Place SVG from SmartQRCode, with Fill Frame kept off the finders, is the method.

Ask the printer whether they will outline or rasterise placed SVGs. If they will, send a PDF/X where you have already confirmed the modules are still square at 100 percent. A RIP that "helps" by flattening to 150 dpi greys the grid. Put QR do not flatten in the job ticket. Then request a wet proof, rather than a soft proof alone, and scan the wet proof.

Questions this raises

Place keeps a vector link. Paste embeds a raster that InDesign will resample when you scale the frame. Vinyl and offset want paths, not interpolated grey.

Fill Frame Proportionally can crop a finder if the frame is not square. Fit Content Proportionally inside a square frame, then lock the frame.

The packaged SVG still encodes whatever SmartQRCode wrote. If that was a hosted website type, you can retarget without placing a new file. A static payload cannot.

A one-off poster that will never be counted or sent to a commercial printer can stay in Canva static QR widget. InDesign is for packaged jobs, bleed, and plate-ready PDF.

Bleeding the pattern to the trim edge eats the four-module margin. Keep the symbol inside the live area, not in the slug, and not under a foil stamp.
