Where to buy a QR code
SmartQRCode editorial · Updated October 2026
Where to buy a QR code is two counters. Buy the encoding from a named generator first. Buy the print from someone who will take SVG to the cutter or a toner millimetre PNG. This is not a marketplace sticker lottery. Hosted SmartQRCode checkout is $1.99, $29, $97, or $197.
Where to buy a QR code
You are about to acquire a scannable file, then a physical object. This walkthrough does not apply if you already have a final https URL and a Canva export that will never change. That job is already bought.
A hosted website code is the buy when the destination will move or you need counts. A Wi-Fi code is the buy when you want a join sheet, knowing it cannot be edited and cannot be counted. Packaging runs usually want hosted URLs so a recall page can move; see packaging.
There is no unpaid SmartQRCode tier. Do not treat a free static PNG from elsewhere as an unpaid SmartQRCode account.
Buy the encoding, then the plate, in that order
- Write the payload on paper: https URL, Wi-Fi SSID and password with case intact, or the landing-page type.
- Decide hosted versus static. Hosted if the URL will change or you need a count. Static if not. Wi-Fi is always static.
- Generate in a tool you can name. For hosted SmartQRCode, complete checkout with $1.99, $29, $97, or $197. Trial then annual: 7 paid days, then annual unless cancelled.
- Ignore the on-screen preview for press. It encodes /qr-preview.
- Download SVG for vinyl and laser. Download a 300 dpi PNG or PDF at the final millimetre size for toner.
- Keep a quiet zone of four modules. Start at 2 cm across for a phone at about 30 cm. Larger on packs read from a shelf.
- Send the vector or the sized raster to the printer. Do not send a phone photo of the monitor.
- Print a proof. Scan with iOS Camera or Android Camera. Confirm the preview host.
- If hosted, confirm the dashboard gained a total, not a name. Then print the run.
Should you buy a preprinted sticker pack
A pack from a marketplace is a not a marketplace sticker you should trust unless you encoded it. If the seller encoded it, you are buying their host or their static payload. You cannot edit a static pack. You cannot audit a mystery host.
If you need 5,000 unique URLs, that is a bulk job on a host you control, not a roll of identical cute squares.
What file does the printer actually want
Vector scales without adding grey. A screenshot is a raster of RGB pixels, often with UI chrome. Offset and flexo want vector. Spot colour should be 100% of one ink, not a four-colour build that fringes.
Vinyl cutters trace PNG into broken corners. Give them SVG. Laser cutters want paths. Apparel and packs need a size for the real reading distance, not a business-card mark blown up.
When is Canva the only vendor you need
When the payload is frozen and uncounted. Generate there or in Google Chart or the phone tools. Skip us. How much does a QR code cost is the money map. Do you have to pay for QR codes is the yes/no.
Failure modes of this purchase order
Buying lifetime and thinking labels are included. Buying monthly to host a Wi-Fi password. Sending /qr-preview to press. Stacking a public shortener on the hosted URL. Expecting the copy shop to change a static destination with a reprint they will not do for free.
A one-time payment still needs a printer. Permanent ink is how to make a permanent QR code, which is a static-versus-host decision, not a shop-aisle SKU.
How a packaging buyer should split generator and press
Packaging buyers fail this purchase when they order 20,000 labels from a marketplace that encoded a URL they do not control. The generator has to be named. The destination has to be yours. The file has to be SVG for cutters or a 300 dpi PNG at the real millimetre size for toner. Quiet zone inside the label edge, not bled off a round corner. Start larger than 2 cm if the pack is read from a shelf, not from a hand.
A hosted website type lets a recall page move without a relabel. That is the point of paying $1.99, $29, $97, or $197. A static Canva URL on a biscuit tin is permanence of the wrong kind if legal will change the URL. Wi-Fi on a pack is almost always the wrong type: passwords rotate, the pack does not.
Do not buy an agency "QR package" that wraps our URL in a public shortener. You already have a short host path. The extra hop hides the preview and adds a second company that can die. 302 on our hop keeps edits live. Their 301 can freeze March's page in a phone until the guest clears caches you do not control.
Proof on the actual stock. Uncoated fibre drinks ink and spreads modules. Compensate with size, not by dropping error correction to L to make the pattern look airy. H survives scuff on packs and densifies the modules. Pick one and test with iOS Camera and Android Camera. If only the designer's phone reads it, you bought a colour proof, not a scannable run.
If the brief is a single frozen https page for a one-off mailer, stop this procedure at Canva. We would be a host you will forget to pause. The copy shop still wants a sized raster. That is the only remaining buy.
A press check is part of the buy. Stand at the real distance. Fill the frame with one code. Read the preview host out loud. If the host is a stranger, you bought the wrong encoding, not the wrong toner. Reprinting 20,000 labels because the shortener died is the expensive version of shopping a mystery pack.
Questions this raises
Only if the URL inside is yours and final. A mystery marketplace sticker is someone else hosting, or a static payload you cannot audit.
SVG to the cutter, or a toner millimetre PNG at 300 dpi or higher. Not a screenshot of the designer.
When the payload will never move and will never be counted. Then you are not buying a host at all.
No. Copy shops sell ink. Edit after print is a hosted URL. Wi-Fi cannot be edited after ink anywhere.
No. $197 is a one-time host payment with no renewal. Labels remain a print-shop line.
